Power tools were dominated by Ni-Cd batteries in early times because it’s workable at bulk current discharge. However, because Cadmium causes serious pollution, the eco-friendly Ni-MH batteries, whose energy density is 1.5 times of Ni-Cd batteries, are gradually being substituted for Ni-Cd batteries.
At present, the 3500mAh HHRSc 300P Ni-MH battery from Panasonic is a substitute for Ni-Cd batteries. In the US, there is a SC module battery whose capacity is 2.2 to 2.4Ah, and is available to pulse at 10 to 20 C discharge rate, also Varta of Germany developed UHP Ni-MH battery for power tool. Because of safety concerns, Li-ion batteries were seldom adopted for power tool before. At present, Aleees LFP batteries get over the safety problem, and are able to high C-rate discharge. It’s the killer application for the power tools market.
